Christmas lights twinkling everywhere, a wonderful
smell of cinnamon, vanilla, grilled sausage and mulled wine, Christmas
music playing in every square – at Christmas time, when the gates of
Stuttgart Christmas Market are opened, the state capital has a special
hold over its visitors. First mentioned in documents in 1692, the
Stuttgart Christmas Market with over 200 beautifully decorated stalls is
not only one of the oldest, but surely one of the largest and most
beautiful in Europe. The little wooden huts, painstakingly decorated
with angels, fir tree branches and baubles, and ‘Fairy Tale Land’ at the
Palace Square (Schlossplatz) provide a breathtaking backdrop and amaze
millions of visitors every year.
In the spacious Palace Square (Schlossplatz), only five minutes on foot
from the Main Railway Station, is the magical ‘Fairy-Tale Land’ for our
small visitors. Everyone, not just the youngest visitors to our
Christmas Market, is fascinated by the nostalgic children’s carousels,
mini ferris wheel, characters from fairy-tales and a mini railway with a
real steam engine which, hissing and steaming, pulls its coaches through
a fairy-tale winter landscape. The daily appearances of fairy-tale
tellers and puppet shows, clowns and magicians keep children’s eyes
alight and pass many a happy hour on the children’s stage in the Music
Pavilion between 2pm and 5pm.
The 500m² skating rink in front of the New Palace (Neues Schloss)
welcomes visitors to a real winter pleasure – open-air skating in the
middle of the city in a romantic, fairy-tale atmosphere. Mulled wine and
punch, grilled sausages and baked apples are all available from numerous
wooden stalls around the skating rink. |
