Every year in the month before
Christmas, Düsseldorf has a very special fragrance. The
scent of mulled red wine, cinnamon cakes, gingerbread
and beeswax lingers in the city centre. The chestnut
trees on Königsallee glitter with a thousand lights.
From the end of November to Christmas, the Christmas
markets in the old town and on Schadowplatz transform
Düsseldorf’s centre into a Christmas wonderland,
attracting many hundreds of thousands of visitors every
year.
Around the time of the traditional Christmas markets,
numerous programmes on offer make a visit to Düsseldorf
an exciting overall experience.
At the end of Königsallee, on Corneliusplatz, a large
skating rink provides free-of-charge fun on ice until
the beginning of January. ‘Nokia Kö on Ice’ offers,
amongst others, free skate training, childminding every
Friday afternoon and on Saturday, and a stimulating jazz
matinee every Sunday.
But not only the ice beckons – there is also
entertainment on (unfrozen) water. The KD shipping
company runs midday and afternoon Advent boat trips on
the Rhine, as well as romantic evening tours with live
music and dance.
A special event is ‘Adventissimo’, a nightly revue show
on MS Loreley. The all-inclusive programme features
comedy, song and instrumental highlights, beginning with
a champagne reception and accompanied by a whole range
of culinary delights. |
