Picturesquely situated on the River Neckar, the same
beautiful river that flows through Heidelberg further
downstream, Tübingen is world-famous for its university
founded in 1477, and one of Germany’s oldest. Many of
the country’s greatest poets and scholars studied here,
but most modern visitors will go to Tübingen for its
unspoilt Old Town, with its narrow, winding streets and
gabled houses rising like steps from the river banks to
the mighty Renaissance castle high above the town.
The delightful market square with its ancient town hall
is especially attractive on market days, when country
people in regional costume can still be seen. But it is
almost certainly the River Neckar itself which will
leave the richest impression, with its reflections of
the city’s historic buildings along its banks,
particularly when viewed from the Platanenallee, a
plane-tree lined avenue famed throughout Germany. |
