For people who cannot resist the lure of the lakes, or
who just like “messing about in boats”, the Mecklenburg
Lake District – just south of the Baltic coast – will
hold a powerful appeal. More than 650 lakes are set amid
woods and low hills, their shores lined with small towns
and villages of an almost mediaeval appearance, blue
waters forever dotted with white sails.
The second largest lake in the area is Lake Schwerin, on
which stands the state capital of the same name with its
picturesque turreted castle on an island. Schwerin also
has a fine Gothic cathedral dating from the 13th
century, and houses the state museum, with an
outstanding collection of German, Dutch and Flemish
paintings. |
