Berlin lies in the heart of the state of Brandenburg and
is surrounded by a natural greenbelt of woodland and
lakes, including the Grunewald Forest, a former royal
hunting park where deer still roam freely; the Wannsee,
a favourite beach playground for Berliners; and the
Müggelsee, which offers leisurely lake cruises.
Only a short train journey to the southwest lies
Potsdam, the finest complex of palaces, parks and
gardens in the whole region. Its most famous palace, the
Rococo masterpiece of Sanssouci, was built by Frederick
the Great to serve as an escape from the cares of state
– hence its name. |
