Set amidst some of Germany’s finest mountain scenery,
Mittenwad, at just a fraction under 3000 feet above sea
level, is the highest health and sports centre in the
Bavarian Alps. With its fine location, it makes a good
centre for exploring the whole of the surrounding Alpine
region.
Germany’s longest ski-run (6.5 km) is at Dammkar, just
outside town, while skiers at all levels of proficiency
will be attracted to the ski centre at Kranzberg, with
its chair-lift and several T-bar lifts. Cross country
skiing, a 1.6 km long toboggan run, skating, curling and
horse-drawn sleigh rides are also on offer.
In the summer, Mittenwald provides a whole range of
sporting activities: tennis, heated pools, swimming in
beautifully clear mountain lakes and hiking – assisted
if you choose – by the Mt. Karwendel cablecar, which
takes you up to a height of 2,244 m.
Mittenwald is one of Germany’s prettiest Alpine towns,
many of its handsomest houses are covered in painted
murals. During Carnival and major church festivals, many
of the townspeople wear original traditional costumes.
Violin-making has also been a feature of the town since
1684, and in the town museum you can watch violins
actually being made. |
