Many German cities lie on either the Rhine or
the Mosel, but Koblenz enjoys the unique and
enviable position of lying on both rivers, which meet
here at the famous Deutsches Eck (German Corner). This
makes Koblenz an ideal base for visiting both wine
regions, and exploring the picturesque villages and
castles that lie so thick on the ground in this part of
Germany.
The Romans founded Koblenz 2000 years ago, and today
there are wine taverns and restaurants standing on the
foundations ofancient Roman walls in the town’s
handsomely restored Old Quarter. Not far from the
attractive Electors’ Palace lies the Weindorf, an exact
replica of a quaint old wine village, and a delightful
centre for sampling German wines with a background of
music, dancing and entertainment every evening from
Easter to the end of October. Koblenz is also a major
centre of the “Rhine in Flames” festival in August of
each year. |
