Frankfurt am Main is the business capital of Germany and
the showcase of the German economic miracle (its
nickname is “Bankfurt”). It is home to the country’s
financial community, its central bank and its biggest
stock exchange. A boring place? Not at all. Its
theatres, concert halls, museums and art galleries offer
a varied cultural life. And in contrast to the high-rise
office blocks, there is a magnificent cathedral, a
Carmelite monastery, many mediaeval churches and the
“Römer” or city hall.
The
zoo is regarded as one of the world’s finest. You should
also visit the serene and gracious house where
Frankfurt’s most famous son, the poet Goethe, was born.
For a city of supposedly hard-headed businessmen,
Frankfurt has a surprisingly easy-going atmosphere, the
“Frankfurter Gemütlichkeit”, which can be sampled
without difficulty in its many cider-houses. Prosit! |
