The Eifel Region, locally known as “Waterland”, offers
two areas of outstanding natural beauty, the Süd and
Vulkaneifel (literally, the southern and volcanic Eifel).
Lying at the heart of Europe, east of Luxembourg and
Belgium, west of the Rhine and north of the Moselle,
their locations are ideal for excursions to Trier,
Aachen and Koblenz.
Over 9,000 years ago volcanic eruptions created numerous
craters in the Vulkaneifel which over the centuries have
filled with water of an astonishing blue purity.. These
lakes (Maars) are framed by the thickly wooded peaks and
lush pine forests of the Eifel. Many of the “Maars” are
ideal for water sports of every description,
particularly windsurfing and waterskiing, or simply
swimming in the wonderfully pure water.
Only a river separates the Südeifel from Luxembourg and
Belgium. A million years ago nature created a paradise
of gorges and rock formations here. Later the Celts,
Romans and Dukes left behind magnificent residences,
which can still be visited here. In the Südeifel
tradition features strongly, whether it be the local
food, the farmhouses or the festivals!
Angling is an attractive option in the Süd and
Vulkaneifel – and naturally both regions are a paradise
for the walker and the cyclist.
Daun, Bitburg and Prüm are the cultural centres of the
region – Daun is famous for its wildlife park and
Bitburg for its beer, not forgetting the famous mineral
water of the spa-town Gerolstein. |
