Members of the House of Coburg ruled half the world in
the 19th century, with descendants on the
thrones of Portugal, Bulgaria, Russia, Rumania and
Sweden, not to mention Queen Victoria’s consort Prince
Albert. This grand heritage is proudly preserved in
Coburg today, and not least in the palace of Ehrenburg,
with its fine state apartments, and the beautiful market
place and town hall.
Just outside Coburg lies one of its greatest
attractions. Here, towering above the town, is the Veste,
the largest fortified castle in Southern Germany. Martin
Luther translated much of the Bible here, thereby
creating the basis of modern German. The castle also
houses a world famous copper-plate engraving collection,
the biggest collection of arms in Germany and one of the
largest and finest collections of glass in Europe. |
